55 Market Street
Fender Katsalidis was appointed by Mirvac to refresh 55 Market Street, Sydney.
The project consists of a redevelopment of the retail podium, redesign of the commercial lobby and upgrade of the commercial office floors.
Located in the heart of the CBD, 55 Market Street is nestled between Sydney Town Hall and Hyde Park and sits amid Sydney’s retail district.
Our redesign of the retail podium draws reference from several surrounding buildings and their associated heritage features which all include a clear hierarchy of fenestration, from street level upwards. The design acknowledges the existing patterns and structural constraints, allowing 55 Market St to co-exist with its surrounding context.
By extracting the tiered pattern of near-by heritage buildings, continuation of the street’s rhythm is achieved; the facade features consistent patterns and establishes and makes clever use of mullions to express heritage-like detail. These mullions vary in size, allowing the lower retail space to have maximum exposure to the street frontage while higher up office spaces are accommodated with filtered views.
The three-storey commercial lobby is visible from the street through the façade’s clear glazing and the continuation of black granite pavement. A hanging art piece doubles as a as a lighting element while also balancing the large volume space, able to be appreciated by both pedestrians and users of the lobby.
