This project aims to be much more than a great hotel for travellers. It will become a village centre, supporting the airport community as a place to gather and socialise for all those who work at the airport. For this reason, the public uses of the building are expressed separately, but integrated with the hotel uses.

The building’s form is an expression of its various uses. The rectangular hotel wings are the product of functional efficiency. Sunshades wash over their facades in abstract pop-art colours, fresh and crisp on the skyline to catch the eye.

The hotel wings provide an embracing backdrop to the public pool, cafe and bar pavilion uses in front of them.

The hotel’s distinctive shape is derived from an aerofoil – sliced to reveal the pool and gym – and serves as a memorable marker.

The hotel’s considered composition of form, colour and pattern will resonate with the anticipation and excitement of travellers on an adventure, providing the functional efficiency appreciated by regulars and operators, while setting a new standard for people-friendly placemaking within the airport precinct.

FK has since been engaged for the interior design of the commercial workplace within the Melbourne Airport Hotel as an agile work environment.
