Hotel Mona
Mona’s next phase of growth includes a proposed 176 room, 5-star hotel on the museum’s current site in Berriedale, Tasmania.
The proposal for Hotel Mona also includes a 1075-seat theatre, a new multi-purpose conference centre (with capacity for 1000 people for a banquet-style gala dinner and 1600 people for a plenary-style event), a spa designed by artists James Turrell and Marina Abramović, playgrounds designed by Toshiko MacAdam, Tom Otterness and Daily tous les jours, more gallery space, and office space for Mona staff.
The centrepiece of the Hotel Mona experience will be a library, which will house David and his mates’ collection of books, maps, documents, and weird stuff.
Hotel rooms will be elevated above the Derwent River, with the design inspired by an inverted suspension bridge. One off, special experience rooms are being developed with a selection of internationally renowned artists. The south-east facing rooms look towards Mt Wellington/Kunanyi, the north-east facing rooms look up the river towards Claremont and Otago Bay.
